How Dry Shampoo Improves My Mental Health

Dry Shampoo

Dry Shampoo.

I wouldn’t say it saves my life. I wouldn’t say I love it almost as much as my family. But almost….

I have decided that dry shampoo improves my mental health.

I’m going to talk about the shampoo first and how it helps me second. You know, so those busy execs at Batiste don’t have to read the whole blog post to realize I’m their biggest fan and send me a lifetime supply for free.

So I’ve tried many a dry shampoo since they became a thing. I mean something to help me prolong doing my hair for one more day and mask how dirty it is…. I jumped on that band wagon fast!

I’ve tried powders and sprays, expensive and cheap. However, the experimenting was over when I found Batiste. It is accessible at most drug stores. It is inexpensive and it works amazingly.

Dry shampoo

Also for someone like me who has dark hair it has an added amazing feature that it doesn’t turn your hair white like from a powder.

So basically it’s a miracle in a can.

Now I’m not extremely health conscious, but I try to pay attention to what I’m putting in and on my body.  But when it comes to dry shampoo I don’t care. Ignorance is bliss. I don’t know what’s in it, I don’t care. I’m choosing to believe it is good for me because it makes my life better and that is that.

It is good for me. It is good for my mental health.

See, I’m a working mom of two. I have a lot of plates spinning in the air at once…A LOT. I’m not complaining. I thrive with a full plate. I pride myself on being involved as a wife, a mother, a daughter, cousin, friend, community member etc. Also, professionally, I have more than one job. I own my own business, and I’m working on getting my name out there.

Without balance and boundaries I could literally work 24/7 and still find more to do.

But I work on balance and boundaries. Maybe more importantly, I prioritize self care.

For me, doing my hair is not a highlight of my day or week. I have a lot of hair and it is high maintenance. My personality is low maintenance, and I’m a busy person. Not a great combination. I’m low maintenance but I still like to look nice. And for my hair to look nice in my eyes it takes maintenance, a lot of maintenance.

Dry shampoo

Someday, When I am independently wealthy, I will have someone else wash and blow dry my hair ALL the time. But until that happens, dry shampoo saves the day!

When I do my hair completely, no short cuts, the whole washing-blowdrying-styling process can be over an hour, close to two. I often don’t actually have this much time at a reasonable hour or the energy to do it. So sometimes to avoid my head of hair giving away how tired I am or that I could still use a little work on balance and scheduling, I use dry shampoo and it buys me time.

I can leave the house feeling more put together on the outside than maybe I feel on the inside and this boosts my confidence. It helps me remember I’m human, and sometimes I have dirty hair. It also reminds me I’m not alone because dry shampoo is a thing and if I was the only one who needed it, it wouldn’t be a thing.

Hey Batiste, I’m not alone but I am your biggest fan and singing your praises all over the place…. So about that life time supply….

But in all seriousness I decided to write about dry shampoo not because of dry shampoo but because of what it represents to me. I made a joke about how much I love it, but then it clicked. Dry shampoo is important to me because it helps me be a better me. To have more time for the things I love and to be more confident. It’s actually become a tool in my coping tool box. A tool that helps me keep the plates spinning in the air with out dropping.

So what’s your favorite tool helping you juggle life?

I grew up in Orange County then went to Los Angeles (with a short detour in Santa Barbara) for college and spent the next 12 years there thinking that was home until I met my amazing, now husband on Jdate.com and moved back here to start our life together. I have a young son and daughter that are two years apart. They are thick as thieves and keep us laughing. I worked in Hospice care for 15 years and now I take Working Mom to a whole new dimension with a private mental health practice www.melissafishergoldman.com. I worked hard with many jobs hustling for many years to grow my own business. I'm proud to say I'm helping people in my own office full time. The decision to quit my full time job working for some one else and to work towards creating much needed grief, trauma and self esteem support in Orange County fills my soul. I may not spend 24/7 with my kids but I plan to be role model to them and the time we have is all about quality not quantity. I'm working on a life/work balance but I find this is much easier when I love all aspects of my life and work and self.
