Regular GirlThe discovery of Regular Girl

In November 2018 I attended a great healthy living conference called the WOW Summit. We met lots of great health-focused companies and learned so much. It was there that I found Regular Girl. It’s safe to say that this supplement has changed our family for the better!

In 2017 my youngest son, Arlo was diagnosed with autism. He was four. Life changed a lot for us that year. We began therapies, we changed schools, and we did everything we could to help Arlo learn strategies to navigate life with his ‘special brain.’

We were exhausted, both physically and mentally, and we let ourselves go in more ways than one.

Bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microscopic living things are referred to as microorganisms, or microbes, for short. Trillions of these microbes exist mainly inside your intestines and on your skin. Most of the microbes in your intestines are found in a “pocket” of your large intestine called the cecum, and they are referred to as the gut microbiome.

Late in 2018, I began to learn about the gut/brain connection and how important gut health is for living a healthy lifestyle. The more I learned about our gut microbiome, the more fascinated I became with this incredible part of our bodies. I realised that there was a good chance that we were all living with a ‘leaky gut’ and I wanted to find ways to begin to heal our guts and feel more energised and beat the bloated feeling so many of us are familiar with! ENTER REGULAR GIRL!

What is Regular Girl?

Regular Girl and Us

I have rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease. Some medical research is now beginning to explore the link between a ‘leaky gut’ and autoimmune diseases (I like this article from Frontiers in Immunology which explains this more in depth). I was interested to see not just how Regular Girl could help Arlo (click here to read more about his experience with it), but also what it could do for me.

I began to take it every day in my water bottle.

Within a month my hands were no longer sore when I woke up. 2 months after starting our gut health journey, I saw my rheumatologist who told me my disease had gone into remission. I have reduced the dosage of my Plaquenil (the drugs I take for my RA) and he expects me to fully come off them in the next 6 months.

That is just one story of how great you can feel when you take small steps towards healing your gut.

I follow some amazing people on Instagram who have made huge life changes to heal their guts. I wish I had the strength and determination to do the same, but I will probably never go vegan or eat a predominately plant-based diet. What I have done though is introduce more probiotic rich foods into our diet.

The lights of my life!

We eat more fresh produce. We drink kombucha (some of it isn’t to our taste, but with trial and error we’ve found some delicious brands that even our 7-year-old loves). I make kvass as a delicious alternative to fizzy drinks. I add kefir to our smoothies and I sneak fiber-rich veggies into everything I can! I haven’t got around to making my own yogurt or kefir – maybe I never will.

But I feel like I am doing enough to keep our guts healthy and I am thrilled at the health benefits we are feeling thanks to Regular Girl!

In case you didn’t know, I am a (recovering?) skincare addict. I like to take care of my skin with fancy face masks and serums. What I have always known is that great skin starts with a great diet. You can spend all the money you want on fancy products, but without a healthy lifestyle, your skin will never look its best.

It isn’t until we began to introduce probiotics into our diet that my skin truly began to look how I wanted it to look.

I have completely paired down my skincare collection (partly down to my No Buy Journey!) and I am loving how clear my skin is looking. Don’t tell Sephora, but I’m pretty sure this is due to Regular Girl rather than the fancy serums I love.

I’ve heard of Probiotics. But What are Prebiotics?

Probiotics are bacteria that naturally occur in our bodies. They help our bodies to break down food effectively. Probiotics can be found in food or be taken as digestive supplements (hello Regular Girl!).

Prebiotic fiber is undigestible to humans, but guess who is fueled by prebiotics? PROBIOTICS! Think of the prebiotic as probiotic’s supportive bestie. You can take either of them separately for great benefit, but the prebiotic support the probiotic and helps it be its best self (just like your bestie does!).

Basically, the prebiotic is like a food for the probiotic. You do not need prebiotics for probiotics to work, but they make it perform more effectively, which can only be a good thing. Prebiotic fiber also helps with digestion, which again is only a good thing for most of us!

How do we take Regular Girl?

This is literally the best part about Regular Girl, especially for families with fussy eaters. It is a white powder that can be added to anything liquid and cold and it has virtually no taste. NO TASTE! We add it to a small glass of juice or a smoothie but it can also be added to water, yogurt, milk or any other liquid your kids love. It doesn’t change the texture or thickness. I just add it to my water bottle each day. It leaves the water ever so slightly cloudy, but I don’t think it’s noticeable unless you look closely. It genuinely has no discernable taste and there are no unwanted side effects that you can experience with other fiber supplements. MAGIC!

Viv Jones
I am Viv, stay at home mom (mummy) to Edison who is 7 and Arlo who is 5. I am married to my best friend and university sweetheart Steve. In October 2014 we moved 5321 miles from our beautiful Victorian home in Sheffield, England to Anaheim Hills and are loving the wild adventure this move has turned our life into. I am so very grateful that this move has given me the opportunity to quit my kinder teacher role to stay home with my crazy whirlwinds and enjoy the adventures of modern motherhood. I love farmers markets with my little foodies, antique shops, restoring antique finds, reading, baking, eating out and trying not to spend everything we have in Target! Oh and chips. I LOVE chips (crisps for any Brits reading this). All the chips.
