An Open Letter to My Son’s Kumon Teacher

This post is brought to you by our partners at Kumon.

When Arlo was 4 we pulled him from preschool to keep him home. We knew we needed to investigate what his special needs were but we needed something else to help him with his learning. I was happy to keep him home, but I wanted something to keep him going until I found the right school for him.

That’s when we found you, Mr. Ali.

We started at the Kumon Center in North Orange  and I think we must have been some of your very first kids at your brand new center!

You had an infinite amount of patience with Arlo. You worked with me to help make the program work for our family. Ali, you will never know how his kind and thoughtful input with Arlo helped our family. Over the past 2 years, we have watched Arlo go from a little boy who could not even stand to hold a pencil (the sensory effect of gripping was so difficult for him to manage), to a full-blown reader who reads chapter books and has the most beautiful writing.

Your Kumon school has taken my little boy who was finding life so difficult and helped shape him into a child who no longer struggles with his academics.

Edison also does Kumon and it turned him from a struggling reader in 1st grade to a successful reader now. His teacher just told me how great his comprehension is, and I put that down to our consistent dedication to Kumon!

I genuinely cannot speak higher of the impact Kumon has had on my childrens’ learning journey so far and I cannot thank you enough for giving Arlo the chance to thrive at your center. I know his behaviour was challenging at times, and I think many Kumon centers might have given up on him, but you didn’t, because you value all children. THANK YOU!

We do Kumon every day, including weekends, vacations and holidays.

That’s hard for a kid to get used to, but you helped us to transition our boys to manage that homework. It has become second nature to do our homework wherever we are – we’ve Kumon’d in Vegas, Mexico, Hawaii, NYC, San Fransisco, England, and of course at home.

You have blessed my children with the gift of great study habits early on in their learning journey.

I cannot thank you enough for the positive steps you have taken to help the kids to want to do their homework. There is the sticker chart for attendance, the extra stickers for completing the packets (that includes putting your name and time on them!), and the treasure boxes. Nothing spurs my kids on more than a treasure box!

I’m not going to lie and say it’s easy. Some days we don’t want to do the homework. But you know what we do? We persevere. Thanks to the Kumon Effect we know the benefits of giving it our best even when we don’t want to. Knowledge is power, right? So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Ali, for giving us the power and gift of knowledge.

Viv Jones
I am Viv, stay at home mom (mummy) to Edison who is 7 and Arlo who is 5. I am married to my best friend and university sweetheart Steve. In October 2014 we moved 5321 miles from our beautiful Victorian home in Sheffield, England to Anaheim Hills and are loving the wild adventure this move has turned our life into. I am so very grateful that this move has given me the opportunity to quit my kinder teacher role to stay home with my crazy whirlwinds and enjoy the adventures of modern motherhood. I love farmers markets with my little foodies, antique shops, restoring antique finds, reading, baking, eating out and trying not to spend everything we have in Target! Oh and chips. I LOVE chips (crisps for any Brits reading this). All the chips.
