Social Media Favorites : Snapchat vs Instagram

social media instagram snapchatSocial media is all the rage right now – Instagram, Facebook, Periscope, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, and the list goes on. Basically, you name it, someone is using it.

These days, people use the different social media channels for so many different things. Small business owners are using Instagram to show their items and run their businesses. Grandparents are using Facebook to see pictures of their grandkids. Food bloggers are using Pinterest to get their recipes out to millions. And that’s just a very small portion of the ways that people are using social media.

For me, personally, I use Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat but Instagram and Snapchat are by far my favorites.

I use social media to share pictures of my family and my life with my friends and family… and strangers. Yes, you read that right, strangers. Or, well, people who used to be strangers. You see, I have a blog of my own and through blogging, I’ve made some amazing friends. It’s crazy to explain to anyone who doesn’t blog, but to those of us who do, it’s just another reason why we love the amazing blogging community.

I will tell you, it took me AWHILE to download Snapchat.

I’m in my early 30’s, but I thought I was too old for it. I thought teenagers were using it and I am far too old to be using teenage technology. But boy was I wrong! All of my blogger friends were using it and finally convinced me to download it. And ever since, I’ve been hooked.

That being said, I am a lot more private on Snapchat. I don’t advertise my username anywhere and have only allowed certain people who I feel comfortable with follow me. These people are all the people I have met through blogging, consider myself friends with, and feel comfortable with seeing my “raw” images.

And then, of course, my real life friends (it never stops being weird saying that) and my family members. I’m much more laid back on Snapchat than I am on Instagram but I feel like that’s just the name of the game. Snapchat is just that, a snapshot in time.

Instagram is much more thought out. Sure, technically it’s a snapshot in time as well, but it’s much more thought out, planned, and edited than Snapchat is. Snapchat barely has any filters except the pretty filer (best filter ever!), a “lighten up” one, and a black and white one. Oh, and of course all those fun ones that let you stick your tongue out like a dog, wear a flower crown or a cat on your head, and face swap with your three-year-old.

Snapchat you can share things that you randomly see wherever you are.

See an awesome product at the store? See someone doing something funny? Having a good mail day? Snap a picture and share it with your friends! It’s not necessarily Instagram or Facebook-worthy, but it is worth sharing. It’s kind of like texting with your friends in a group text. And best of all, you don’t have to worry if it’s good or not. As long as you can get the point across, you’re good to go!

Instagram is MUCH more planned, at least it is for me. I don’t just post anything. I usually take a few (if not tens of) pictures before I choose the right one. I want the one where my son is smiling. I want the one that I look good in. I want the one that perfectly captures the situation. Depending on what the picture is of, the criteria is different. Once I have the perfect picture, I open one (or more) of my editing apps and fix the lighting or the color, straighten the image a bit and maybe even pre-crop it. And then I come up with a clever caption. Even though it takes a lot more thought and effort, it’s definitely my favorite form of social media. If I have a couple of spare minutes, I check Instagram. I love seeing what my friends are up to and what they’ve been posting.

Snapchat and Instagram are both so different yet so similar. I love sharing different situations on each and seeing what my friends are up on each as well. In my personal opinion, Snapchat and Instagram trump Facebook and Twitter any day.

Are you a Snapchat or an Instagram lover like I am? What’s your favorite social media platform?

  1. Instagram and Snapchat are my two favorites too. I use them both regularly, but for totally different purposes. I tend to “overshare” on Snapchat, which is what makes it fun. Great article!
