They’ll Remember How You Made Them Feel

how you made them feelYour kids, your family, your friends – they’ll remember how you made them feel.

It’s the Holidays and if you’re like me you’re ordering your Christmas cards, shopping for presents, trying to remember where you put that list of addresses from last year, and baking cookies to eat give to your neighbors.

We all know that this time of year doesn’t have anything to do with gifts or lights or any of those things, but I also think we forget what it really is about.  We’re stressed to the max trying to remember to move that ELF!  We’re running to and from all sorts of Holiday parties!

And those things aren’t bad at all!  They’re FUN!  They’re what makes this season amazing and CRAZY.

But in all of that, I don’t want us to forget – I don’t want us as MOMS to forget – that how we make all of the people in our lives feel is how they will remember us.

I think this is in all of our subconsciouses.  There are some people that we meet and are immediately attracted to.  They make us feel great!  We may have similar passions, personalities, or situations.  And then there are people who immediately make us feel awkward.  Something about that person just rubs us the wrong way or has little warning lights going off in our brains.

I strive to make others feel good about themselves.  I try really hard, but I’m far from perfect.  There is one particular person that I worked with many years ago that I made feel terrible.  And I almost did it on purpose.  I wish I could go back in time and smack myself.  I wish I could undo the cutting things I said and the tone in which I said it.  This person may have been SUPER annoying, but I shouldn’t have acted the way I did.  I am sure if the thought of me ever crosses this person’s mind it will bring up really bad feelings because that is exactly how I treated this person.  I still think about it to this day.

Perfection.

I think we can all agree that perfection isn’t possible. But sometimes I’m afraid that especially during these Holidays we are striving so much for perfection that we don’t stop to realize no one cares!  Like really – no one cares that you have the absolute perfect outfit, or house, or shoes, or hair.  They might mention it for a hot second, but in reality, they will remember how you made them feel.

If we could focus more on how we made others feel as opposed to who has the biggest and brightest of whatever – the Holidays (and really any time of year) might be truly magical.

As moms we want our children to feel loved, protected, safe, cherished, the list could go on and on.  Which is why we do Elf on the Shelf and a number of other crazy things.  Because we love our kids and we want them to feel the magic!

But don’t forget that you don’t have to do a million different things to make them feel loved.   You being you is always enough.  YOU. ARE. ENOUGH.

So during this Holiday season, remember that the one thing people will remember about you is how you made them feel.  It isn’t the amount of money you spend on their present or whether you brought the perfect pie.

They’ll remember you – and how you made them feel.  So just be you.

Happy Holidays Mamas!
